Healthy School Recipes is powered by a team of school nutrition and culinary experts. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive online resource for K-12 school recipes. We are passionate about improving food culture in schools, and promoting healthy, delicious meals that kids will love.

Cathy Powers, MS, RDN, LD

Catharine Powers is a partner with Culinary Nutrition Associates LLC and Culinary Nutrition Publishing LLC. She is co-author of the textbook, Essentials of Nutrition for Chefs, the IACP 2011 cookbook winner for the Health and Special Diet category. She also is the co-author of Portion Photos of Popular Foods and Recipe Nutrient Analysis: Best Practices for Calculation and Chemical Analysis.

Cathy is also a trainer with the Institute of Child Nutrition and was project manager for their award-winning training program, Cooks for Kids and was project coordinator for the revision of their online course, Culinary Techniques for Healthy School Meals. Cathy spent nearly 15 years at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) where she was instrumental in developing the Institute’s cutting-edge nutrition program.  She is currently chair of the CIA’s Healthy Kids Collaborative.

Samantha Cowens-Gasbarro, SNS

Executive Chef

Chef Samantha Cowens-Gasbarro, S.N.S., is a Johnson & Wales University graduate with a degree in Culinary Nutrition.  She worked in restaurants, as a personal chef for professional athletes and taught at a cooking school for kids and adults before she found her passion in school nutrition.

She spent 5 ½ years as the Chef and Nutrition Coordinator at Windham Raymond Schools where she created new and healthy recipes, trained staff and taught kids the importance of healthy eating all while increasing participation for that district.  In addition to training the staff in her district, she has trained staff across the country in culinary skills and ways to increase participation.  She has also spent time developing recipes for K-12. She serves as an active member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Healthy Kids Collaborative. She believes that through school meals, nutrition education and exposure to new and healthy foods we can truly create a generation of healthy eaters and change the food culture in our country.

Rebecca Coste

Director of Operations

Rebecca Coste is a partner at Culinary Nutrition Associates, LLC.  She has 20+ years of experience in project management and leading organizations.   She is excited to be joining a project with the mission of improving the health of our nation’s children.

Whitney Bateson, MPH, RD

Website Developer

Whitney Bateson is owner of Whitney Bateson Digital Strategy LLC, and brings her digital marketing and technical expertise to the Healthy School Recipes website. Prior to founding her agency, Whitney spent a decade developing initiatives for child nutrition programs across the country, blending design, technology, and marketing to train foodservice professionals and deliver wellness and sustainability programming.

Whitney oversees the design and maintenance of the website.
